Cheryl Kain believes everyone can sing, and in the power of each person’s unique voice. Her vast vocal range, powerhouse pipes and sensitive, vulnerable delivery allow audiences to be both moved and soothed. Sophisticated yet accessible, earthy and ethereal, with a heavy dose of soul, Cheryl sings her originals, jazz standards and pop with heart and a sense of joie de vivre.
Born in a “Victorian Hamlet” in New York’s Hudson Valley , with one traffic light and no movie theatre, Cheryl’s ears were raised on Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Sarah Vaughan and Ella as her father played drums around the Catskill Mountain circuit. In high school, she toured the tri-state area with a beloved gospel group, and continued studying voice, French horn and piano.
Formally training in horn and opera at The Crane School of Music, then The Eastman School of Music, Kain was well-versed in everything from French & German art songs, Greek Folk Songs, Mozart and Saint-Saens arias, as she graduated from The University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance.
After graduation, a 5-year long stint in New York City gave Cheryl opportunity to perform as a member of an East Village comedy improv company as she honed her vocal chops performing weekly at the world-renowned Village Gate. An invitation from television producers to read for a starring sit-com role led Cheryl to Los Angeles.
No sit-com, but plenty of singing work kept Kain in L.A. for 13 years, where she continued writing original pop songs, teaching voice and studio singing. Her debut CD Code Name Grazey was released on Boston’s indie SoundStone Records, and was played on over 60 Triple-A and College Radio stations across the U.S. and Canada, and promoted by Ani DiFranco’s radio promoter, Joe Sweeney/OneWing Productions.
Missing family and the east coast, Cheryl moved to Cape Cod in 2003. Since moving to the peace and quiet of the Cape, she has finished her novel, started singing with Latin Jazz band The Mike Garvan Group and performed with Cheryl Kain Trio at various venues on the Cape. Her CD Bloom is a compilation of originals and more obscure jazz standards.
